In 2018, the Romanian death metal band Rancorum released their debut album “The Vermin Shrine”, which is still one of the best Romanian death metal albums at the moment.

Who are they? Rancorum is a death metal band from Bucharest, which was founded in 2014 as a duo (Nick – guitar, Gigi – drums). Four years later, 3 more members joined them: Liviu (voice), Tiberiu (bass) and Călin (guitar).Just few months later, they released “The Vermin Shrine” which contains songs from different death metal subgenres. After the release, they had some really amazing shows with Romanian well-known bands as Vathos or Eternal Fire, but also with Grave Desecrator (Brazil), Fractal Universe (France) and many more.

What is their story and what plans do they have for the new decade? We have talked to them this week and here is what they’ve said.

Why did you start the band?

As it is known by now, the band was started 5 years ago by Nick and Gigi. At that time, beside jamming together to some of their favorite death metal tunes, they were already aware of this new wave of old school death metal albums that have invaded all the media channels from 2010 onward, with some instant classics from Bay Area to dutch and finnish scene and so on, all of them provided by new bands. Also, from time to time, the news talked about the resurections of some legendary death metal bands – reuniting, new album, new tour, etc. So, the idea that a genuine death metal band could be a good thing in these times on the scene of Bucharest has grown stronger and after some demo songs have seen a shape, the band got a name and its members. As for the question “why”: We just enjoy making music and playing it live.

What does the name of the band stand for?

Rancorum is the latin for “of rancors”, where the “rancor”, as in its latin origin, means an old grudge, or in our case, all the wrong ways that rule the world and that are almost unbeatable. We thought it had a nice sound to it and it also fit the music and the message within quite well.

Which is your target as a band for the next 5-10 years?

Releasing as many good albums and ep’s as we can. Playing bigger and better gigs.

You have released the debut album “The Vermin Shrine” in 2018. Which song do you think is the best and why?

Each member has his own opinion on this but we consider that all 6 songs have a different twist to the death metal style that we play and are equally good to us.

When should we expect a second album?

We are in the process of writing new songs. We expect the writing process to be done by the end of this year. The next album will most likely be completed next year though.

What other plans do you have for 2020?

We have a mini tour in place which will be officially be announced on our social media page. Stay tuned!
