Alex & The Fat Penguins launched a new single yesterday, “Ursul” (the Bear), a protest song in which the band draws attention to the need for civic involvement derived the desire to generate the long-awaited change. Therefore, the Penguins warn as #ursuliesedinbarlog to fight injustice, carelessness in the community, frustrations that suffocate us. The bear is each of us because everyone has a duty to contribute to decent living conditions, to caring for others and for nature.

“”Ursul” is, for me, a song with a great emotional load, inspired by the drama lived by my family that had suffered severely because of the Soviet dictatorship and the separation from Romania. I have always wondered, what is “at home”? Where is “at home”? ”

Is it far? Is it late? Is it where my friends are? My family? Where your native language is spoken? Or where there is no prejudice and racism? Where your dreams come from? Or maybe all of this in one place?

Born in Chisinau and raised in Bucharest, “home” for me has always been in two places. Two places, linked to each other, in so many points; history, culture, tradition, language, spirituality. Two places, two countries, two banks of the Prut, two customs, the same nation. For me “home” is Bucharest and Chisinau, on the map of Great Romania.

This “off”, related to the feeling of “home” inspired me to compose “Ursul”. I think we all have an off and sometimes a simple gesture can change a lot. We bears get out of the trough and do everything in our power to really enjoy “home”, said Alex Coțofan. Alex & The Fat Penguins have become accustomed to us over the years with message-laden tracks, arising from pressing contemporary issues.

The play “Just a Fool” launched two years ago aimed at the problem of corruption, and in December 2017 it was interpreted as a spontaneous protest in front of the Romanian Government building. Also, the band has a track that refers to the dramas caused by the civil war in Syria – “Admiral”, and through “Urlă Pământul” (“Scream the Earth”) they have sounded an alarm signal about the dangers which we pose to the environment and how these dangers will inevitably be our downfall.

Alex & The Fat Penguins is formed of Alex Coțofan (vocals and guitar), Mihai Ungureanu (bass, backing vocals), Daniel Rizea (guitar), Mircea Steriu (guitar) and Ionuț Țebeică (drums)
