FRIG (translated as cold from the Romanian language) is a band from Bucharest, Romania, and they craft their unique blend of metal and electronic music to create a new creative fusion of modern metal with avant-garde, doom, techno and industrial influences devoted to the theme of Cosmos.
The band strives to represent the frame of avant-garde metal music influenced by progressive and post-industrial metal styles that leaves the explorer band members open to experiment while still sticking to an eruptive sound.

‘genOm’, the band’s latest release, proposes one of the most ambitious projects of refreshing nature. It is well known that here in Romania the virgin forests disappear alarmingly, so basically with ‘genOm’ FRIG started a great campaign of reforesting the country. How does this work? All of these lead to a unique design and a biodegradable package, including exotic varieties of seeds, the necessaries instructions for plantation and a generated QR code for the final EP, for you to listen on Digital. Once you plant the seeds you get to look for a brighter, greener future.

We’ve tried to find out more about their inspiration and their future plans in an exclusive interview. Here is what they said:

Why have you made the band and where does the name come from?

Alex Deak: Hi to everyone! Its origins are deeply assigned to a cosmic phenomenon which in our musical subject is represented by cold, this is the translation from the Romanian language.

This phenomenon got its musical vibe within the arts of expression behind all space visual forms of this amazing seen and unseen true nature, not even from a static fact of science in view by traveling among astray along with those experimental sounds, from the feel of unique journeys that can be found in these musical spheres, which are in an avant-garde mode interconnected.

We already know the meaning of the album’s name, but who had this idea?

Alex Deak: From a macro to a micro perspective I have been into the creation itself from the first graphical stage towards landscape ideas including lyrics of either vid nocturn´´ album and genOm ep live presentation, and together we develop all required frequencies to complete those interconnected points into definite arts.

Wrecker: From all I know it’s been all Alex’s vision. And I found it particularly interesting, that’s why I’m here for the next albums.

Which song from the album is your favourite and why?

Alex Deak: If I look on a vid nocturn“ page, the journey itself got me a catchy mood on all its passages enchanting in the act of minus 0.010°, on the other dark side of the microcosmos journey, stellar gravitation pulsed more neutrinos in the place of Arise of Ganymede, but along its complete genome sequences the path of Gaïan spirit has its untouched trajectories, depends also on a bpm feel structure and here I let the listeners experiment those bizarre hertz ebbs.

Dex: Hard to decide, I like all of them. If I were to pick one favourite, I would go with “Australe” because of the nice measures that were used to write the song. It’s pretty catchy and fun to learn.

ROTTA: That would be “Australe” because of the heavy sound and also the space and air it brings. Even if I don’t play it note for note the way Sergio did it, I am pretty close and despite its complexity; it is fun to play.

Wrecker: I inhale and exhale groove metal so my favourite one has to be Australe. Most of them riffs transform the song, low key, a big breakdown in my opinion.

When and how have you decided to support nature in such an unusual way?

Alex Deak: We go all the way avant-garde with think and care for the environment, nature it represents us air to breathe, existence and we should have gratitude in the first place. When formed the movement and transfer of bringing the stellar cold images into sounds, that has generated genOm’s origins of sequences and the development of the project itself, reforestation identifies with nature genomes and genOm identifies with a microcosmic nature, as years ago they have discovered the human genome now we can sound map it in another chapter of another universe condition, without filters just from astrobiology point of view through microscope lenses, everything that describes genOm from its single to images is related to the fact of evolution in its simple dimension. Why the opposite? – then we get inhuman and we do not think it is a solution, we consider that we still have the spirit to propels music through the veins of our inner souls/universes.

Dex – My passion for nature and preservation of nature goes back to high school years. I find that one of the most important things in life is to understand and respect nature as much as you do for yourself; We are all part of nature and we are depending on it. Who knows, maybe in the future more and more people will begin to realize that we are not exactly on a good path when it comes to preserving what surrounds us.

ROTTA – That would be after I decided to join the band. It was something entirely new the way the whole project was thought out, and I appreciated this way of thinking outside the box.

Wrecker: We are not your typical environmental activists, but this is a perfect way to show awareness about ecological education while we still get to do what we like. We all know the results are noticeable after one generation has passed. So that’s when at least I decided to support this cause. And the reason, besides the awareness like I said, is to show people that there is a better alternative than plastic, but shit does be tricky ‘cause it’s more work involved. But it’s worthed. So do your part!

What other plans do you have for supporting nature?

Alex Deak: Get a look at our website page, it is a way to discover what other rays are ongoing for our sustaining both musical nature and the habitable one.

Dex – We are discussing the possibility to go and plant trees where needed, in addition to cleaning forest & lake areas.

ROTTA – I am a firm believer that if you want to make a change, you start with yourself so I am taking it to step by step.

Wrecker: For now I think we’ll stick to this, and later on we’ll aim even higher. And frankly, that’s such a big question at least for me at this specific moment! Anyway, we’ll try our best and even more.

What message do you have for the other bands/artists who are trying their best to support nature and humanitarian causes?

Alex Deak: Support the scene without competition, there it is no place nowadays for such methods, it is vital to confront the reality surrounding us with morality, equilibrium, involvement, efficiency and none at least gathering should have the pulse here more than ever, elaborate solutions with care, and stay connected because this is where we live and grow together.

Dex: I would just like to say that every bit counts, every action in this direction is more than needed now. Keep up the good work and never abandon the cause.

ROTTA: There can never be enough people trying to help nature and humanitarian causes, so to those, I salute you!

Wrecker: Let’s all get together, make tones of noise about environmental issues about in a good fashion, and support each other. Let’s educate the youth so they will inherit a desire to protect the environment when they’re full-grown adults and hopefully make better laws and systems regarding that.

What message do you have for your fans and metalheads who are going to read this interview?

Alex Deak: Find yourselves in our sounds, new releases are on the board and keep the spirit frozen as well stay safe, respect each other, and take care for all!

Dex: Thank you for taking the time to read our interview, it means a lot!

ROTTA: Keep on rockin’! \m/

Wrecker: If you never cared for this environmental stuff or maybe it’s such a bother for you, don’t worry and don’t feel guilty or something! I didn’t care for it either for the longest time, but we gotta start somewhere and it’s better now than later. This is the work that doesn’t deserve applause; it should be common sense for all of us.
