Ever heard of 100gecs? Dylan Brandy and Laura Les rose to internet fame in 2019 with their first studio album, 1000 gecs, which received critical acclaim. Exploding seemingly out of nowhere, the duo began collaborating in 2015 after having met in high school. Most of their music was made remotely, as they now live on opposite coasts, so they did not have as many issues due to the lockdowns as other artists.
They released a remix album, 1000gecs and the Tree of Clues, in the summer of 2020, featuring artists like Fall Out Boy, Charli XCX, Rico Nasty, Dorian Electra, and Nicole Dollanganger. 100gecs played their first show online, in a music festival they organized in Minecraft.
Their interesting, chaotic aesthetic and down-to-earth persona has gathered the duo a massive following very quickly, which helped earn the attention of the big personalities that they have collaborated with.
On January 7th, 2021, 100gecs added another feature to their belt after releasing One Step Closer, with Linkin Park, out of all the bands. Fans took to Twitter to voice their shock, excitement, and even disgust. Meanwhile, Mike Shinoda was all too happy to thank the two for a successful collaboration.
Uploaded directly to Linkin Park’s official YouTube channel, One Step Closer has just over 300,000 views and 21k likes, with most fans ecstatic to see the nu metal legends on a song with the contemporary duo.
After working with pop, metal, and alternative rock artists, it seems that no genre is out of bounds for 100gecs, which only begs the question: who’s next?
