The quarantine was a really hard period for bands and artist. We talked to some bands from all over the world to see the real effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic in music.

Today we talk to Mihnea Craciunescu, also known as YCCMD, one of the most promising Romanian young artists.

How can you describe the changes generated by the pandemic in your activity?

Insightful. I took the time to hone some of my skills and develop new ones (in-between manageable panic attacks). Yes, there were a bunch of projects that fell through and will probably never be addressed again, but I feel it’s for the best. There’s no positive spin to a global pandemic and it came with some hard truth to it: artists need to evolve.

What daily activity did you miss the most during quarantine?

None. I was practically quarantined before it was cool, as 90% of my time is spent between the studio and home.

Were there any pluses for this period without concerts?

I didn’t have too many concerts to begin with (either to play or attend) so personally, I can’t say I was affected by the lack of any. I have however realized that as an artist, you need to develop abilities that help you adapt to an ever changing scene. Live Streaming for instance… I didn’t think of it as a legitimate way to earn anything, let alone money, but now, after trying it (and learning how to by my own means), I see that it’s an efficient way to build a community (which is particularly hard and necessary) and therefore even generate funds for future projects.

How does it feel to hear the idea of returning to some normalcy?

I don’t like normal. I think normal is bad for the music industry. I started my adventure in the music business with no expectations whatsoever and now I feel I’m in too deep to just quit, though I feel I am entitled to, as it is more business than music. I feel things need a change. Granted, not as radical as the change the pandemic determined but maybe after this shakeup of the industry, artists are more in touch with themselves and can therefore deliver more distinct material. To create music that is less about commercial potential and more about the craft.

What plans have you got for 2021?

I’ll be working. I have gathered the means to do anything I put my mind to (music related) and I hope to waste as little time as possible. I have two EP’s in the works, one in English and another in Romanian and a podcast I’m really excited about. I hope this to be my best year yet.

Do you have any message for the bands or artists who are still in lockdown/quarantine?

People need you. Not in the way they need food, so stop bitching about how hard the life of a struggling artist is. Life is hard as a whole, so let’s be dignified survivors of these backwards times we’re living through. Let’s deliver what we are expected to. Music helped me and I like to imagine my music will help others. Let’s be helpful.

What message do you have for the people who are going to read this interview?

I hope I don’t come off as a pretentious asshole, thank you for reading and check out my stuff. Best wishes and stay healthy!
