The quarantine was a really hard period for bands and artist. We talked to some bands from all over the world to see the real effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic in music.
Today we talk to Stonebrother, a hard rock band that mixes punk, metal and good old rock n’ roll. The band consists of Zach Smith on guitar and lead vocals, Ethan Smith on drums and vocals, and Leo Cox on bass.

How can you describe the changes generated by the pandemic in the band’s activity?
Zach: The pandemic gave everyone a kick in the pants, and the music industry took it harder than some. Live gigs are coming back slowly though. But when it first started we had to regroup and think hard about what our next move would be. We did a weekly live stream for a while last summer, and we’ll start doing that again as much as possible. But as things in Nova Scotia start to open up again, we’ll be trying to play as much as possible. We also had to cut back practices, but as the summer approaches we’re getting back to normal with that too.
What daily activity did you miss the most during quarantine?
Ethan: During the pandemic, I’d have to say just the simple act of going out with friends was a weird thing to not be able to do anymore; it’s something you take for granted until you can’t do it anymore.
Were there any pluses for this period without concerts?
Leo: Our band was active even without live music, not as much as we’d like to be (because ideally we’d be doing shows) but our area was in a good enough situation where we were able to go to a local studio and get some songs down on tape. So for pulses, yes, our band was quite alive.
How does it feel to hear the idea of returning to some normalcy?
Zach: We are very excited for that. It’s not here yet, but we’re very hopeful that when it is safe to do so, we can start packing people into venues again.
What plans have you got for 2021?
Ethan: For 2021 we’re hoping to get some shows in. We didn’t really get to, but with all the good news about vaccines, it’s hopeful we’ll be able to get some gigs, and if all goes really well this year maybe a music video or even a full album.
Do you have any message for the bands or artists who are still in lockdown/quarantine?
Leo: Don’t get down on yourselves, try new things and do what you can. Even though you might not be able to go out and do shows, you can spend time writing music, working on your technique, and overall becoming a better musician.
What message do you have for the people who are going to read this interview?
Wear your masks. For the love of God, wear your masks. Other than that, keep supporting small bands. We’re trying hard to keep people entertained, a comment on a YouTube video goes a long way.
