The Summer of 2022 is proving to be very important for Rana. With a new EP, “Verde electric” (“Electric Green”), released on Saturday, 30th of July, the 3 guys band has already played the opening slot for big bands like Byron.

We caught up with Rana’s lead vocalist Bogdan Tănăsescu to discuss about the exciting experience of releasing their first EP, about their very beginnings, how music influences them and much more.

Bogdan, how did you end up making music?

I have a special relationship with music from a young age, because my father is also a vocalist and throughout my childhood I watched him at rehearsals and concerts, and not only. He was also always playing the guitar around the house, making my path towards music a slightly inevitable one.

I grew up going to concerts with my family and, as I became a teenager, I ended up going to concerts on my own and choosing my own bands to listen to, breaking away from the classic rock way and getting into the alternative culture zone.

How was the moment when you knew you wanted to have a band?

I was in high school and I really wanted to have a band where I could decide the musical direction. I had been playing guitar until the formation of the band Rana in various short projects where I didn’t fit in and it all culminated with wanting to sing too, in a time when I had no idea what being a frontman really meant and what vocal warm-up was and other such concepts.

What sacrifices has music demanded from you so far?

At the moment we don’t really feel them. We don’t have a lot of things to worry about, and everything is very relaxed around us. I think sacrifices come as you get older also followed by more obligations, that come into anyone’s life.

What kind of music supports you in difficult times?

In the band Rana, many genres of music are listened to. I can say that, in difficult times, I listen to Placebo, Death Cab for Cutie, Tom Odell, Keane, Inhaler, Coldplay, etc.

Your release looked magical on social media, especially with the timing of the rain, but also the scenery the winery offers. How do you feel after the release of the EP?

We feel free. We had so many emotions before publishing it and I don’t know why, because we are very proud of it.

The launch at the winery was the most important concert for us and the most emotional, because the unexpected special guest, namely the rain, created a wonderful atmosphere, specific for the manner of the EP. Almost nobody left when the rain started. Everyone had umbrellas, raincoats or some in the audience were resigned and without any rain protection.

Also, we would like to thank the artists from Nuanţe, Jack of All Trades and Ana Coman for honoring us with their presence at this important moment for our career.

We thank the Winery (Marcea) for their support, patience and trust. The most beautiful concert venue on Earth is there.

Tell us a good memory from the concerts you had in the last few weeks.

Apart from all the beautiful moments at the winery, another nice moment was at Câmpulung when at the encore all the spectators gathered around us, sat down and we sang unamplified. It was just like being in a big group of friends.

Would you reveal us something from your future plans?

We don’t have anything clearly established at the moment. But mostly, to sing live as much as possible and start working on the next record material.

If you had to pick one song from your recent releases and tell its story, which one would it be and why?

I don’t like to pick one particular song, I find it very difficult, but the whole state of the EP is of chaos accumulated over the years, in relation to our growth as a band, as people.

Each song has its own story and I think it’s very nice to discover it yourself and give it whatever meaning you want.

What do you think the world can learn from music the way you and the band Rana do it?

I think people need to learn to be honest once they listen to us. Our music is very personal and direct, it has no hidden substrates and meanings to discern. We are exactly what we sing, and the world should be exactly what it is, how it wants and how it feels.

What message do you have for those who read this interview?

To be honest with themselves.

Bogdan, cum ai ajuns să faci muzică?

Cu muzica am o relație specială de mic, deoare și tatăl meu este vocalist și, de-a lungul copilăriei mele, l-am urmărit la repetiții și în concerte și nu numai. Mereu cânta și prin casă cu chitara, facându-mi drumul spre muzică unul ușor inevitabil.

Am crescut mergând la concerte cu familia și pe măsură ce am ajuns adolescent am ajuns să merg singur la concerte și să îmi aleg trupele pe care să le ascult și să mă detașez un pic de maniera rock-ului clasic și să ajung în zona de cultură alternativă.

Cum a fost momentul în care ați știut că vreți să aveți o trupă?

Eram în liceu și îmi doream foarte mult să am o trupă în care să decid eu direcția muzicală. Cântasem la chitară până la formarea trupei Rana în diferite proiecte scurte în care nu mă regăseam și totul a culminat cu dorința de a cânta și cu vocea, într-un moment în care nu aveam habar ce înseamnă de fapt să fii frontman și ce încălzirea vocală și alte concepte de genul acesta.

Ce sacrificii a cerut pentru voi muzica până acum?

Momentan nu prea le simțim. Nu avem foarte multe griji, iar totul e foarte relaxat în jurul nostru. Cred că sacrificiile apar pe măsură ce crești și apar mai multe obligații care apar în viața oricui.

Ce muzică vă este vouă sprijin în momentele grele?

În trupa Rana se ascultă foarte multe genuri muzicale. Pot spune că în momente grele eu ascult Placebo, Death Cab for Cutie, Tom Odell, Keane, Inhaler, Coldplay etc.

Lansarea voastră a arătat feeric pe rețelele sociale mai ales cu momentul ploii, dar și peisajul pe care-l oferă crama. Cum vă simțiți după lansare EP-ului ?

Ne simțim eliberați. Atâtea emoții am avut până să-l publicăm și nu știu de ce, pentru că suntem foarte mândri de el.

Lansarea la cramă a fost cel mai important concert pentru noi și cel mai emoționant, pentru că invitatul special neașteptat, și anume ploaia, a creat o atmosferă minunată, specifică manierei EP-ului. Nu a plecat aproape nimeni când a început ploaia. Toată lumea avea umbrele, pelerine de ploaie sau unii din public erau resemnați și fără niciun fel de protecție pentru ploaie.

De asemnea, le mulțumim mult artistilor de la Nuanțe, Jack of All Trades și Anei Coman că ne-au onorat cu prezența la acest moment important pentru cariera noastră.

Mulțumim Cramei (Marcea) pentru suport, răbdare și încredere. Cel mai frumos loc de concerte de pe pământ este acolo.

Spuneți-ne o amintire frumoasă din concertele pe care le-ați avut în ultimele săptămâni.

Înafară de toate momentele frumoase de la cramă, un alt moment foarte drăguț a fost la Câmpulung când la bis toți spectatorii s-au strâns lângă noi, turcește și am cântat neamplificat. Eraexact ca și cum suntem într-o gașcă mare de prieteni.

Ne dezvăluiți din planurile voastre de viitor?

Ceva stabilit clar nu avem momentan. Dar, în mare, să cântăm cât mai mult live și să începem lucrul pentru următorul material discografic.

Dacă ar fi să alegi o melodie din cele lansate recent și să-i spui povestea, care ar fi și de ce?

Nu îmi place să aleg o melodie anume, mi se pare foarte greu, însă toată starea EP-ului este de haos adunat de-a lungul anilor, în raport cu creșterea noastră, ca trupă, ca oameni.

Fiecare melodie are povestea ei și mi se pare foarte frumos să o descoperi singur și să îi dai ce înțeles vrei tu.

Ce crezi că are lumea de învățat din muzică în felul în care o faci tu și trupa Rana?

Cred că lumea trebuie să învețe să fie sinceră odată ce ne ascultă. Muzica noastră este foarte personală și directă, nu are substraturi ascunse și înțelesuri de deslușit. Suntem fix ceea ce cântăm, iar lumea ar trebui să fie fix ceea ce e, cum vrea și cum simte.

Ce mesaj aveţi pentru cei care citesc acest interviu?

Să fie sinceri cu ei înșiși.
