How many times have you wondered who takes care of the sound at the concert you’re at, who does the lights, or what it’s like to be at the drums or bass, in the shadows, while most of the audience looks at the guitar and vocals? Well, I’ve wondered that my whole life. From the first concerts at Vița de Vie, at Beer Days and City Days with Cargo or Phoenix, if I wasn’t in front of the stage, I was next to the sound tent, curious to see what was happening there. I would observe why that guy moved a certain button when it turned red or another color and why the vocalist sometimes looked too much towards the sound tent and made signs.
That’s why I decided to write the “Underground Scene” column. To thank the child in me and bring to the forefront the people who usually don’t come forward. A column in which I am determined to talk to the people behind a concert or with the members of bands who are not seen as much. My mother taught me from the first Cargo concert in my childhood that I had to pay attention to what Alin Achim was doing on bass and that without the drum in the back to keep the rhythm, everything would be in vain and non-functional.
My curiosity has remained unchanged, perhaps even stronger than in childhood. I want to learn the stories of the people who create a professional environment at concerts, festivals, and events. These are the people in the shadows, without whom the show would not be possible. They are the ones who ensure everything sounds perfect and that the lights add the necessary magic to each moment.
Over the years, I have realized that every concert and every festival is a team effort. Not only do the artists on stage make the show memorable, but also the technical team behind it. They are the ones who transform every note, every word, and every visual effect into an unforgettable experience for the audience. These experiences have sparked my interest and made me appreciate the work done by everyone involved in organizing a successful event. Therefore, I want to learn as much as possible about their work and share these stories with others.
Our first guest says:
I liked everything I did. I never played in a project out of obligation or to create discomfort for myself. There are problems that I understood and are exclusively internal problems. You have to think that maybe it’s not just about you or not just about your opinion, you know? And sometimes, sometimes I realize that maybe I’m wrong, but I always loved what I did, I really, really liked what I did.
Underground scene is an initiative started by me, Ionela Plesan from Rock Monsters. I aim to talk to people who seem to be less visible in the Romanian underground industry. My goal is to engage in meaningful conversations with a diverse array of people, from drummers and bassists to sound engineers and lighting technicians. Each of these unsung people has a unique story and invaluable experiences to share, stories that can inspire and educate us all.
The heart of Underground Scene lies in its commitment to uncovering and sharing these narratives. I believe that every person involved in the underground music scene, no matter their role, contributes significantly to the richness and vibrancy of the industry. By giving them a platform, I hope to foster a greater appreciation for their work and inspire others to delve deeper into the world of underground music.
