The acclaimed English post-punk band, Squid, will perform on October 3, 2024, at Control Club, marking a milestone event for the venue’s 16th anniversary.
The performance will be in support of their latest album, O Monolith, released last year to widespread critical acclaim.
This highly anticipated show is part of a series of anniversary events at Control Club, showcasing innovative artists from around the world. Known for their genre-blending sound and experimental approach, Squid promises to deliver an electrifying performance that will captivate local fans for the second time in Romania.
Praised by critics for their creativity and boldness, O Monolith continues to push musical boundaries. As Mojo noted, “Squid’s wayward invention has had space to breathe, adding a new confidence to their defiant leaps of faith.” Pitchfork described the band as “fascinatingly, still somewhere off the map,” while The Line of Best Fit crowned them “the house band for our post-normative existence.”
Hailing from Brighton but currently based in Bristol, Squid consists of lead singer and drummer Ollie Judge, guitarists Louis Borlase and Anton Pearson, bassist Laurie Nankivell, and keyboardist Arthur Leadbetter. Since their debut album Bright Green Field (2021), released by Warp Records, the band has garnered significant attention for their innovative sound, combining post-punk, experimental rock, and new wave influences.
Their sophomore effort, O Monolith (2023), explores themes of environment, domesticity, and folklore, layering complex sounds and atmospheric textures. Produced by Dan Carey, the album is a testament to the band’s growth, featuring ambient passages, post-punk energy, and intricate rhythmic experimentation. Critics have hailed it as a more contemplative and unpredictable offering compared to their debut, drawing comparisons to 2001: A Space Odyssey in its openness to interpretation.
Squid’s Bucharest performance will immerse audiences in the abstract, pastoral eeriness that defines O Monolith. Tracks like “Swing (In a Dream)” and “Siphon Song” showcase the band’s ability to blend chaotic crescendos with haunting atmospheres, while “Undergrowth” and “The Blades” reflect existential tension and narratives that explore everything from reincarnation to surveillance.
Don’t miss this opportunity to experience one of the UK’s most exciting and boundary-pushing bands live in Bucharest. Squid’s performance at Control Club is sure to be an unforgettable highlight of this year’s anniversary celebrations.
