East European Music Conference 2026 transforms Bucharest into the epicenter of Europe’s live music scene

East European Music Conference (EEMC), the international platform at the intersection of the live music industry, cultural policy, and education, returns to Bucharest between 20–24 May 2026 for an expanded edition that promises to redefine the way Europe thinks about live music and event production.

Launched in Sibiu in 2017, EEMC stands at the forefront of the live music ecosystem, addressing a crucial challenge for the industry’s future: how we can ensure creative and professional sustainability in the live music sector while preserving the fundamental values of democracy, freedom of expression, and cultural diversity. In a European and global context marked by political tensions, restrictions on artistic freedom, and challenges to minority rights, the conference provides a structured space for dialogue between practitioners, researchers, and policymakers, building real and sustainable solutions and laying a solid foundation for the new generation of LIVE music professionals.

This year’s edition transforms Bucharest into a meeting point for the most important players in the live music industry: through keynotes, panels, practical workshops, case studies, networking sessions, and cultural experiences around the city, participants will explore the full musical ecosystem—from artists and booking agents to festival managers, technicians, and representatives of cultural institutions.

The EEMC opening event will take place on 20 May 2026 at Control Club, promising an energetic evening of authentic music with Balkan Taksim, one of Romania’s most original bands, joined by their guests. With a unique blend of traditional rhythms and electronic sounds, Balkan Taksim creates a colorful and vibrant musical kaleidoscope, continuing to surprise audiences after the success of their debut album Disko Telegraf (2021) with their second release, Acide balkanique (2025). Over time, Balkan Taksim has performed at festivals such as Paléo Festival de Nyon, Paraiso Festival Madrid, See Festival | BOZAR Brussels, Balkanik Festival, Electric Castle Festival, Jazz in the Park, and Astra Film Festival. Their music has been promoted on radio by Iggy Pop, Nick Luscombe, Gilles Peterson, Stuart Maconie, Cerys Matthews, and Kevin Cole. In 2022, the band was nominated for the Music Moves Europe Awards and performed for the second time at Eurosonic Festival.

The EEMC showcases capture the pulse of the contemporary scene, offering an authentic connection with the city’s nightlife, artists, and professional community. They highlight the diversity and energy of local and regional live music scenes and strengthen the link between the conference and the roots of urban culture.

Partners and Consortium: a European Standard of Excellence

The 2026 edition opens with the panel VALUES FIRST – “Why There Is No Conference Without a Compass”, presented by TAKE A STAND—the European music sector’s awareness campaign for social engagement—and YOUROPE, the most important European association of music festivals. Founded in 1998, YOUROPE brings together organizers from across Europe to exchange experience, promote sustainability (through the GO Group), and uphold shared values, including through the TAKE A STAND campaign. The association includes numerous members and organizes events such as the European Festival Conference.

Also at EEMC, the session The Live Music Ecosystem in Europe: Growth, Concentration and Diversity – Who owns Europe’s stages, and what does it mean for the music we hear? will be held, in collaboration with some of Europe’s most influential conferences and festivals: Eurosonic Noorderslag (Groningen/Netherlands), Reeperbahn Festival (Hamburg/Germany), MaMA Music & Convention (Paris/France), Tallinn Music Week (Tallinn/Estonia), and Linecheck (Milan/Italy). These platforms represent benchmarks for professional exchange, artist development, and cultural policy dialogue, positioning EEMC among Europe’s elite live music conferences and as one of the organizers of the Music Moves Europe Dialogue sessions commissioned by the European Commission.

The conference also benefits from the presence of partners within the national and international music ecosystem: AROC (Romanian Association of Concerts and Cultural Event Organizers), FoMC (Federation of Music Conferences, an organization connecting and representing music conferences worldwide), LIVE EUROPE (a pan-European initiative supporting concert venues in promoting European musical diversity), Live DMA (a European network of live music associations dedicated to strengthening the sector through cooperation and knowledge exchange), and YOUROPE, along with additional conference organizations that contribute to sustainable development of the music sector, artist mobility, and the strengthening of European professional networks.

Conference Opening: VALUES FIRST – “Why There Is No Conference Without a Compass”

The panel “VALUES FIRST. Why There Is No Conference Without a Compass – Democracy, Dignity and the Right to LIVE Music”, which opens EEMC 2026, places fundamental values before any business strategy or ticketing algorithm. In an international context marked by rising authoritarianism and pressure on artistic freedom, this panel brings together four personalities whose careers embody the practice of values—often shaped by significant challenges:

  • Dan Perjovschi – artist and civic activist who has documented truth on walls, both under dictatorship and in democracy
  • Michal Kaščák – festival director and recipient of Slovakia’s highest civilian honor for defending human rights
  • Vlad Yaremchuk – artistic director who transformed Ukraine’s largest festival into a humanitarian crisis institution overnight
  • Fruzsina Szép – festival founder who reimagined live events as inclusive spaces for all participants

The opening keynote is delivered by Prof. Özgehan Şenyuva, one of Europe’s leading researchers on youth, civic participation, and democratic values, while the discussion is moderated by Elena Calistru, a prominent Romanian civic activist and president of the EESC ECO section. The panel highlights the direct link between fundamental European values and live art from four perspectives: art as witness, art as principled rebellion, art as survival and solidarity, and art as radical inclusion.

The event concludes with a collective commitment—a declaration of values that will guide the entire conference and remain a reference point for the EEMC movement in the years to come.

EEMC: more than a conference— a platform for best practice and responsibility

East European Music Conference is not just about what happens on stage. It is a conference for the entire live music ecosystem, connecting the industry with universities, research, and cultural policy. From audience safety and gender equity to the protection of cultural spaces and ethics in AI, each session applies the values discussed in the opening panel—building a common language for the entire conference.

Through this approach, EEMC 2026 reaffirms its unique role in Europe: a conference that combines professional excellence with civic responsibility, offering participants not only information but also a moral and ethical compass for the entire live music industry.
