Wacken is just around the corner, with all of us expecting a great show and new bands to listen to from the Metal Battle. But what do you know about the bands who were in Top 3 in the last few years?

Last year, An Theos, a folk-metal band from Bucharest, won the 3rd place in the Metal Battle (the 3rd best performance of a Romanian band at Wacken after Dirty Shirt and E-An-Na). After this amazing prize, their ascension began in Bucharest, Romania and Europe.

Who are the members of the band? Loredana, Florin, Gabi, Teddy, Lorena, Catalin and Tudor are some young and ambitious metalheads who want to live a real-life fairytale. If you want to know what are their hobbies and what they like, you can check at http://www.an-theos.com/band.html .

What is their story? We’ve talked with Gabi (Andrei Dragoş-Gabriel) about this and asked him some questions.

Why have you made the band?

We had previous other musical projects before An Theos both individually and as a group. We were big fans of metal, Romanian folklore and history and we started to notice the rise in popularity of the European folk metal scene. Having tons of inspiration both musically and lyrically, we decided to start a project that fitted both our musical inspiration and the demands of the local and European scene.

Where does the name of the band come from?

Theos means “God” both in Greek and in Latin. “An Theos” can also be translated as the year of the god or “…to the gods”. Lots of people asked us either if we know Greek or if someone gave us the idea. It is fascinating that most people find a different meaning for it

Where does the inspiration for the songs come from?

Our inspiration changed throughout the years. We started with our symbolic ancestors, the dacians, and then shifted to our feelings, to nature and spirituality.

Can you describe what did you feel at Wacken?

Wacken is a place where you are flooded with all types of feelings. From being super nervous to the point of collapsing to being super excited and overrun with adrenaline. This is a one in a lifetime chance and it’s something we will never forget.

What changed after your performance at Wacken Metal Battle in 2018?

What changed was our view of the metal scene and music industry. It was a huge wake-up call to the challenges and rewards of being part of such a complex and exciting world.

What are your goals and plans for 2019?

We started to write a new record which will be finished and released in early autumn. After that we will start touring everywhere we can. Once all is settled, we will post our schedule for everyone to come and see us!

What is your message for all your fans and people who are going to read this interview?

We cannot thank you enough for supporting us all this time. None of our accomplishments would have been possible without all of you. We love you all and you ROCK! \m/

We really think that An Theos can be as big as Eluveitie in Europe and all around the world, but only time will decide that. Till then, just enjoy their music and remember the name!
