There are always some bands and songs that will always be remembered in a country.

Today we talk to VUNK, the Romanian legends of rock. The band, formed under the name VANK in 1994 (and changed to VUNK in 2009), celebrated 25 years of activity in 2019, 25 years in which they have completely changed Romanian rock with hits like “Pleacă!” or “Vreau O Tara Ca Afara”.

Many of their amazing songs have been awarded, most important awards being “Best Rock” at Romanian Music Awards 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 and “Best Romanian Act” at MTV Europe Music Awards 2011.

2019 was a special year for VUNK, as they have released the album “Domnul Portocaliu si Masina Timpului”, which also includes their latest hit “DejaVu”.

We tried to find out more about their amazing career and about their future plans from Cornel Ilie, the vocalist of the band.

Which was the most beautiful moment during the 25 years of the band and why?

Looking back at the 25 years, I think that the most important moment was the one when we figured out our own voice, that one particular spirit that can be found in all of our songs, during whichever period they might have been written. The irony, the texts with many meanings, the love of harmonies, the use of multiple chords, the joy, the energy and the hope that remain at the end of our songs, all of these form our musical personality, the mark that no-one can take away, the digging that we’ve all been doing since 1994. That moment, I think, is more important than the release of our first album, the success of our first hit or any other moment throughout our history.

Which song, do you think, had the greatest impact and why?

The most played and listened song is, undoubtedly, ‘Pleacă’. But I think the greatest impact was and still is, maybe even more than at its release, made by ‘Vreau o țară ca afară’.

I’m saying this because many Romanians found themselves in this song, who maybe are not our fans, but still believed in the message we sent, in this wish sang as a mix between a shout and a prayer, as an incantation. This is the song that brought us in the minds, and especially in the souls of the people who maybe didn’t know that much about us. Especially during this time, when there’s elections, the song is more powerful, because it’s more actual than during the moment it was written, in 2010.

Do you plan to release a compilation with the most popular songs of VUNK?

We released something of sorts around five years ago, under the name ‘Hituri și mituri’ and ‘Best of VANK’ in 2004, the last album under the name that we started with, VANK.

We’ll wait around two-three years and I hope we’ll make another selection of new hits. 🙂

You’ve also released the book ‘Deja-Vu. 25 years of VUNK’. What inspired you to choose this title? What is the message that you’re trying to send to the fans through this book?

The book, edited by Curtea Veche Publishing, is our story that I told starting with the day I first met Nicu, the band’s drummer with whom I founded the first band which led to VANK and later to VUNK. The title refers to this trip with the time machine, to reliving these 25 years of ours.

The message that lies within the lines of this book is not only for our fans, but for every man who has a passion and needs courage, patience or power to fight in order to achieve it.

The book is a helping hand to whoever needs an impulse to fight for their dreams, no matter how impossible they may seem. We’ve achieved our greatest dream and we’ve been living it for 25 years every day. If we could, especially if you read the book and found out what we’ve been through, then others can, too and even better or faster than us.

What are your plans for 2020?

We have a new album full of great tracks, songs in which we put a lot of faith. Next year we’ll go on a tour around the country to bring the album to as many people as possible and we’ll release as many songs off it as we can.

What’s your message to the VUNK fans who’ll read this interview?

To rest assured that in Romania rock has always been listened to and played, that there’s a lot of rock listeners and there’s more and more of us 🙂

And, most importantly, ‘Dreamer, open your eyes and dream’.

Care a fost cel mai frumos moment din cei 25 de ani ai trupei şi de ce?

Privind acum înapoi la cei 25 de ani, cred că cel mai important moment a fost acela în care ne-am dat seama de vocea noastră proprie, de acel spirit particular care se regăsește în toate piesele noastre, în orice perioadă ar fi fost ele scrise. Ironia, textele cu mai multe înțelesuri, dragostea față de armonii, de folosirea multor acorduri, bucuria, energia și speranța care rămân la finalul fiecărui cântec de-al nostru, toate astea formează personalitatea noastră artistică, amprenta pe care nu ne-o poate lua nimeni, nișa pe care singuri ne-am creat-o începând cu 1994.

Acel moment cred că este mai important chiar și decât momentul lansării primului album, succesul primului hit sau oricare alt moment al istoriei noastre.

Ce melodie credeţi că a avut cel mai mare impact şi de ce?

Cea mai difuzată și ascultată piesă este, fără nicio îndoială, “Pleacă”. Dar cred că cel mai mare impact l-a avut și îl are în continuare, poate mai mult acum decât la lansarea lui, “Vreau o țară ca afară”.

Spun asta pentru că în acest cântec s-au regăsit milioane de români, care poate nu sunt fanii noștri, dar care cred în mesajul transims de noi, în această dorință cântată ca un mix între strigăt și rugăciune, ca o incantație.

Asta este piesa care ne-a adus în mintea și, mai ales, în sufletele foarte multor români care poate nu știau atât de multe despre noi.

Mai ales în perioada asta, în care sunt alegeri pentru președinte, piesa este cu mult mai puternică, pentru că este și mai actuală decât atunci când a fost ea scrisă, în 2010.

Puteţi rezuma ce înseamnă noul album pentru dvs. într-un cuvant?

Aveţi în plan să lansaţi şi o compilaţie cu cele mai populare melodii VUNK?

Am lansat ceva de genul ăsta acum vreo cinci ani, sub numele ‘Hituri și mituri”, iar în 2004 am lansat ‘Best of VANK”, ultimul album sub numele cu care ne-am lansat, VANK.

Mai așteptăm vreo doi-trei ani și sper că o să mai facem o selecție de hituri noi 🙂

Aţi lansat şi cartea “Deja-Vu. 25 de ani de VUNK”. Ce v-a inspirat să alegeţi acest titlu? Care este mesajul pe care doriţi să îl transmiteţi fanilor prin intermediul acestei carţi?

Cartea, editata de Curtea Veche Publishing, este povestea noastră pe care am spus-o începând cu prima zi în care m-am cunoscut cu Nicu, bateristul trupei și cu care am fondat prima noastră trupă care a dus la VANK și, ulterior, la VUNK. Titlul face referire la această călătorie cu mașina timpului, cu retrăirea acestor 25 de ani ai noștri.

Mesajul care se află printre rândurile acestei cărți nu este doar pentru fanii noștri, ci pentru orice om care are o pasiune și îi trebuie curaj, răbdare sau putere să lupte pentru a și-o împlini.

Cartea este o mână întinsă tuturor celor care au nevoie de un impuls să lupte pentru visul lor, oricât de imposibil ar părea de împlinit.

Noi ne-am împlinit cel mai mare vis al nostru și îl trăim de 25 de ani în fiecare zi. Dacă noi am putut, mai ales dacă citiți cartea și aflați prin câte am trecut, atunci pot și alții și poate chiar mult mai bine sau mai rapid decât noi.

Ce planuri aveţi pentru 2020?

Avem un album cu foarte multe piese bune, cântece în care credem foarte mult. Anul viitor vom pleca într-un turneu prin țară ca să ducem albumul la cât mai mulți oameni și vom lansa cât mai multe piese de pe el.

Ce mesaj aveţi pentru fanii VUNK ce vor citi acest interviu?

Să fie siguri că în România rock-ul a fost mereu ascultat și cântat, că există foarte mulți ascultători de rock, că suntem din ce în ce mai mulți 🙂

Și, cel mai important, “Visătorule, deschide ochii și visează”.
