Doom metal is becoming more and more popular all over the world and Romania makes no exception!

Olympus Mons is a very promising doom metal band founded in 2018. They have become popular in Romania after the release of The Heavens Below, a significant release that reminds us of the worldwide known doom metal bands.

In February 2020, they are going to perform at RockDeDatCuCapul#3, a festival that brings together legends of Romanian rock/metal industry and future stars.

Last week, we had the amazing opportunity to talk to them about the past and future of the band. Here are their answers:

How did the band come together?

Olympus Mons was born with the simple wish of creating doom metal. When Alex Toderasc (bass guitar) and Cristi Lincu (electric guitar) met, they very quickly discovered that they had similar taste in music.

Thus, near the end of 2018, they decided to start a doom metal band and started searching for other members. Cristi Filipescu (drums) came in and the first rehearsals actually turned into music composing sessions. After composing their second song, it became clear that they needed a richer sound for the style they were going for.

“I guess you could say we were lucky. I’d known Cristi [Filipescu] for a long time, and knew what type of drummer he was. I knew he was a professional and played the drums with hunger–and more importantly, I knew what kind of man he is. So, the core rhythm and creative inspiration of the band formed relatively quickly with him and Cristi Lincu having had joined us. Still, we realised that we needed sounds produced by a piano–a keyboard, something. And again, we were lucky. Antonia (keyboard) was actually a coworker of Lincu and I, and happened to be telling us about her musical experience over a cigarette. We asked if she’d like to work together and she remained with us after the first meeting. We were on the same page, it seems.” – – Alex, bassist.

“The boys and I discovered a genre of music I recognized, but didn’t completely understand. After the first few practice sessions, I discovered how creatively permissive and freeing this style of music is. I liked this a lot. I felt like I was rediscovering myself both as an artist and as a person in this band, and everything flowed naturally from the moment we got down to business. It’s wonderful to see such impressive results after only a year.” – – Antonia, keyboard.

” Once Antonia joined us, I felt like we could truly start making quality music–something that was more our style. As a guitarist, it’s great to be able to harmonize your creation with the person on the keyboard. You have a lot of space for creativity and aren’t bogged down by the need to always fill in the sound.” – – Cristi Lincu, guitarist.

“After that, the next few important steps were to find a singer. Again, that person appeared out of nowhere. We’re talking about Victor Frunza, who’s one of my oldest and best friends. Despite this, I had no idea how talented he was at singing, or his liking of doom metal.” – – Alex, bassist.

“I went to the first rehearsals with the boys before Antonia joined, simply because I liked what they did. Aggressive, rough, complex music–just my type. This was inspiring. One day, I wrote down some lyrics and took up the microphone. That’s where everything began. I found a huge challenge being alongside Olympus Mons, and this filled me with eagerness.” – – Victor, lead singer.

“Maybe the reason why we got the band together was dual: our passion for metal, and our love of having a second family with each other. We became very good friends in this recent year, and the music we make bonds us. We don’t have any compositional barriers, we think freely and try to go beyond our limits, all while working together.” – – Cristi, drummer.

“Besides, we like performing live together. We get into a sort of groove, and we transmit it best when we’re all in sync–or at least, that’s what those who’ve watched us practice say. We listen and care about their opinion because, after all, we do this all for them, for those who listen. We hope to gather a fan base whom we can give a piece of ourselves, because we are a part of them.” – – Alex, bassist

What inspired your name?

“It took a while to find a name for the band. Olympus Mons is the name of the biggest volcano in our solar system, which is located on Mars. A solitary rock, massive and alone in the recesses of outer space. The name was suggested by a friend who was really into everything about space, but also really into music. Our logo is an acronym of those two words: OM. We try to compose introspectively, and when you do that you’re just an OM (“human” in Romanian), alone in the recesses of space. That’s how you can find sincerity within yourself, which we then transpose into music. That was also the theme of our first session to compose: being sincere about what we’re doing.” – – Cristi, guitarist.

Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?

“I don’t know if we really have an answer for this. We’re considering a combination of voices, if we’re talking about the creative side. Victor’s voice is very powerful, primordial if you will. Sometimes we wonder what that would sound like with a softer, more innocent voice. We don’t really have any direction to that sense yet. If we’re talking business collaborations, we still don’t have a clear answer. The band is at its beginning, so we will surely need an agent or manager.” – – Antonia, keyboard.

As a band, what is your goal for the next 5 to 10 years?

“We want to perform in front of as many people as we can. We’re all influenced by the music of our childhood, and we want to be there on the stages of the big rock festivals, both in Romania and outside the country, where our idols have gone to. We know we’re not thinking small, not that we want to. We’re dedicated and confident and thankful that the first song we launched as Olympus Mons–The Heavens Below–was received so well.” – – Victor, lead singer.

Where do you get inspiration for your music?

“From within ourselves! Like Cristi Lincu said, we sing about what we discover within ourselves. It doesn’t matter if it’s good or bad. This allows us to be honest about what we are, what we were, and what we’ll become. That way, we can live musically through any experience in our lives, whether it’s good or bad. All we’re trying to do is paint a human picture using vibrations.” – – Alex, bassist.

What do you think is your best song released and why?

“Well, the only song we released is The Heavens Below. We’ve so recorded a few other songs that we’ll release as soon as we finish the music videos. We want to portray every song we decide is complete enough to reach the audience.” – – Cristi, drummer.

What are your plans for 2020?

“We’re starting off 2020 strong! We finished recording the next song we’re going to release and now we’re working on a music video. We’d like to release it by the 28th of February, when we’ll perform at RockDeDatCuCapul #3. Next up is a second studio session, because we want to release our first official album by 2021. In the meantime, we’ll keep performing live as many times as we can, we’ll keep composing, and we’ll also try to find a team of professionals to help promote us.” – – Antonia, keyboard.

In February, you’re opening at RockDeDatCuCapul #3. What are your expectations?

“We’re not sure if we’re opening yet. It’s very possible we’ll be introduced somewhere near the middle of the festival, considering our genre of music. Still, we’re not sure yet. First of all, we’re going to give the fans an experience they’ll never forget, and we’re working hard for this. We want to surpass both our expectations and the fans’ expectations.” – – Cristi, drummer.

Do you have a message for those reading this interview?

First of all, happy new year! Along with this wish, the only other message we’d like to broadcast is the one of our first song: The Heavens Below.” – – Victor, lead singer.

De ce aţi făcut trupa?

Trupa Olympus Mons a luat naștere din simpla dorință de a crea doom metal. Alex Toderașc (chitară bas) și Cristi Lincu (chitară) au descoperit la foarte scurt timp după ce s-au cunoscut că au interese muzicale comune.

Așa că la finalul lui 2018 au decis să pună pe picioare o trupă de doom metal și au început să caute oameni. Cristi Filipescu (tobe) a apărut în decor și primele repetiții s-au transformat de fapt în sesiuni de compoziție. După compoziția a două piese a devenit destul de clar că este nevoie de un sound mai bogat pentru stilul abordat.

“Am avut noroc aș putea spune. Pe Cristi Filipescu îl știam de ceva vreme, știam ce fel de toboșar este. Adică știam că e profesionist și bate toba cu sete și mai important știam ce fel de om este. Deci miezul ritmic și creațional al trupei s-a format relativ repede alături de el și Cristi Lincu. Însă am realizat că avem nevoie de sunete produse de un pian, o clapă..ceva. Și iarăși am avut noroc. Antonia (clape) este de fapt colegă de serviciu cu mine și cu Lincu și întâmplător, la o țigară, ne-a povestit despre experiența ei muzicală. Am întrebat-o dacă ar vrea să colaborăm și a rămas cu noi după prima întâlnire. Ne-am armonizat se pare” (Alex – bass).

“Am descoperit alături de băieți un gen muzical pe care recunosc, nu îl cunoșteam în profunzime. După primele repetiții mi-am dat seama cât de permisivă creațional și cât de eliberatoare este muzica asta. Și asta mi-a plăcut foarte mult. Am simțit că mă regăsesc atât ca artist cât și ca persoană în grupul acesta și totul a decurs natural de când ne-am apucat de treabă. E minunat să vezi că doar într-un an de la înființare avem ceva rezultate grăitoare” (Antonia – clape).

“Odată ce ni s-a alăturat Antonia am simțit că se poate cu adevărat să dezvoltăm muzică de calitate. Cel puțin pentru gusturile noastre. Este foarte bine să îți poți armoniza creația, ca și chitarist, cu clapa. Ai foarte mult loc pentru creativitate și nu ești îngrădit de nevoia de a umple mereu sunetul.” (Cristi Lincu – chitară)

“După aceea unul dintre pașii importanți a fost să găsim un solist sau o solistă. Și iarăși această persoană a apărut pe neașteptate. Este vorba despre Victor Frunză, care este unul dintre cei mai vechi și buni prieteni ai mei. În ciuda acestui lucru, habar nu aveam de existența talentului său și a înclinației sale ca solist de doom.” (Alex – bass)

“La primele repetiții mergeam des alături de băieți, înainte sa vină Antonia, pentru că îmi plăcea foarte mult ce făceau. Muzică agresiva, crudă, complexă..fix pe gustul meu. Și pot să să spun că efectiv m-a inspirat acest lucru. Așa că într-o zi am scris câteva versuri și am luat microfonul. Și de acolo a început totul. Am găsit o provocare mare alături de Olympus Mons și lucrul acesta m-a însuflețit.” (Victor – solist)

“Așa că poate motivul principal pentru care am făcut această trupă este dublu: pasiunea pentru metal și plăcerea de a avea o a doua familie dacă vrei, cu riscul clișeului de rigoare, alături de oamenii aceștia. Am devenit prieteni foarte buni în ultimul an și muzica pe care o compunem ne leagă. Nu avem bariere compoziționale, gandim liber și încercăm să ne depășim limitele ca muzicieni și lucrăm împreună pentru acest lucru.” (Cristi – tobe)

“În plus, ne place să cântăm live împreună. Se formează o anumită energie între noi și atunci când rezonăm la maxim reușim să o și transmitem. Cel puțin așa ne zic oamenii care vin pe la noi la repetiții. Și îi ascultăm și le luăm în considerare părerea, că până la urmă muzica e făcută pentru cei care o ascultă. Iar noi sperăm să ne creăm un public căruia să îi dăruim mereu o parte din ceea ce suntem. Pentru că și noi facem parte din acelaș public.” (Alex – bass)

De unde provine numele trupei?

“Ne-am luat ceva să găsim un nume trupei. Olympus Mons este denumirea celui mai mare vulcan din sistemul nostru solar, care se află pe Marte. O rocă solitară, imensă, singură, în recele spațiului. Numele ne-a fost sugerat de un prieten pasionat de tot ceea ce înseamnă cosmos dar și de muzică. Iar inițialele celor două cuvinte din numele trupei noastre formează logo-ul trupei: OM. Adică noi încercăm mereu să compunem folosind introspecția foarte mult. Și atunci când faci introspecție, ești un simplu OM solitar în recele spațiului. Atunci reușești să găsești în tine sinceritate pe care mai apoi noi încercăm să o transpunem în muzică. Asta a fost și ideea primei noastre sesiuni de compoziție: să fim sinceri cu ceea ce facem” (Cristi – chitară)

Cu cine v-aţi dori sa colaboraţi în viitor?

“Nu știu dacă avem deocamdată un răspuns pentru asta. Dar ne gândim serios să încercăm o combinație de voci, dacă vorbim de partea creativă. Vocea lui Victor este foarte impunătoare și puternică. Primordială dacă vrei. Iar uneori ne întrebăm cum ar suna alături de un timbru dulce, inocent. Dar nu avem decoamdată o direcție clară în acest sens. Daca ne referim la colaborări de business, iarăși nu cred că avem un răspuns clar. Trupa este la început deci în mod sigur vom avea nevoie de un impresar” (Antonia – clape)

Care este obiectivul vostru ca trupă pentru urmatorii 5-10 ani?

“Ne dorim să avem deschidere la un public cât se poate de numeros. Cu toții suntem influențați de muzica metal a copilăriei noastre și nu numai. De aceea ne dorim cu ardoare să fim prezenți pe scenele mari ale festivalurilor rock, atât din România cât și din străinătate, pe care au fost și încă sunt idolii noști. Recunoaștem că nu gândim la nivel mic, nu ne dorim asta. Suntem dedicați și încrezători și suntem încurajați de faptul că prima piesă pe care am lansat-o ca Olympus Mons – The Heavens Below, a fost atât de bine primită. Cu toții putem spune că dacă ar fi posibil peste 10 ani am dori ca Olympus Mons să ne ocupe tot timpul.” (Victor – voce)

De unde provine inspiraţia pentru melodii?

“Din interior! Precum a spus și Cristi Lincu, noi cântăm despre ce descoperim în interiorul nostru. Că e bine, că e rău ce găsim acolo, chiar nu contează. Acest lucru ne dă voie să fim sinceri față de ceea ce suntem, ceea ce am fost și ceea ce devenim. Acest lucru ne dă voie să trăim muzical orice experiență de viață, fie că e foarte rea sau bună. Tot ce încercăm să facem este să pictăm un tablou despre interiorul uman folosind vibrația” (Alex – bass)

Care credeti că este cea mai bună melodie lansată până acum şi de ce?

“Pai singura melodie pe care am lansat-o este The Heavens Below. Deci deocamdată această melodie este cea mai bună lansată. Am mai înregistrat câteva piese pe care le vom lansa imediat ce terminăm videoclipurile. Ne dorim să portretizăm fiecare melodie care decidem că este destul de completă pentru a ajunge la public” (Cristi – tobe)

Ce planuri aveţi pentru 2020?

“2020 începe în forță pentru noi! Am terminat înregistrarea următoarei piese pe care o vom lansa. Acum lucrăm la videoclip. Ne dorim să reușim să îl lansăm până pe 28 februarie când vom cânta la festivalul RockDeDatCuCapul #3. Urmează o a doua sesiune de înregistrări pentru că ne dorim ca până în 2021 să lansăm primul nostru album oficial. Între timp vom continua să cântăm live ori de câte ori ni se oferă ocazia, vom continua să compunem și totodată vom încerca probabil să ne afiliem unei echipe de profesioniști care să ne ajute să ne promovăm” (Antonia – clape)

În februarie o sa deschideţi festivalul RockDeDatCuCapul #3. Ce aşteptări aveţi?

“Nu se știe deocamdată dacă noi vom deschide festivalul. Este foarte posibil să fim introduși undeva la mijlocul festivalului, având în vedere genul muzical pe care îl promovăm. Dar nu e sigur deocamdată. Ne așteptăm în primul rând să oferim publicului o experiență pe care să și-o aducă aminte. Și lucrăm asiduu pentru asta. Ne dorim să ne ridicăm atât la așteptările publicului cât și la ale noastre” (Cristi – tobe)

Aveţi vreun mesaj pentru cei ce vor citi acest interviu?

“În primul rând, la mulți ani! Pe lângă această urare poate singurul mesaj pe care îl putem transmite deocamdată este cel din versurile primei noastre piese lansate: Olympus Mons – The Heavens Below” (Victor – voce)
