On 1st of October, Riot Monk released a new album called “AER” (“AIR” in English) and we can already say that the album is a strong contestant for our “Romanian Album of the Year” award.

We tried to find out more about this masterpiece and how it was born in an exclusive interview with the guys.

How hard was it for you to record in 2020, taking into account the restrictions caused by the pandemic?

Hello and thank you for the warm welcome! We couldn’t possibly answer really honestly to this question because the album, “AER”, was entirely recorded in 2018. But we were in the studio this year too and we rerecorded a song for the album and everything went well. We don’t think that it would’ve been more difficult from a logistical point of view to record the entire album in 2020. We, the band and the sound engineer, took all of the necessary and normal measures, didn’t drink our beers one after another and everything went well. So, pandemic 0-1 Riot Monk.

Where does the name of the album come from?

It was the summer of 2018 in an apartment in Dristor, ”4 in the afternoon, summer heat outside” ,in the home of Vladimir. We were working on the cover of the album, doing the set-up of the altar and we began to write the name of the band on it. At the time we had a few options for the name of the album, from “Orisicui” to “Dia de los Monkos”. ”AER” was on the list even then and it was among the favourites. But the decision that pinned the name of the album was that the other names were long and wouldn’t have looked good on the cover. So we decided to name the alnum “AER” in the end.

What’s your favourite song from the album and why?

In this case each one of us has a favourite, but we really don’t have a favourite because each one of them has its own charm. The fact that we launched the majority of them as singles since 2018 helped cement this feeling towards them. We like ”Conteaza” because we have the story of the clip behins it, ”Be Palinca” because we gave palinca to an entire country and to a festival in the Republic of Moldova, “Riot Day” because Radu stole from Dirty Shirt in the evening of the concert in Brasov. So each and every one of them is special in its own way. As an album they have a special connection , we worked on some really cool interventions to make them connect as they should in an album.
Ok, let s stop philosophizing, we like “Be Palinca” a lot with Mircea’s russian rap. Why? Because it’s rap in fucking Russian! We haven’t launched this version officially yet, but you will listen to it on the album if you’re patient enough.

If you’d have to choose one word to describe the drawings for the album and for the merch what would it be and why?

”Authentic” would be the best word. It’s part of the philosophy of the group, the ethos after which we guide since we began making music together. Authenticity and the job well made were from the first day the fundamental reference point for us and we wanted to send this message with our album cover and, indirectly, through merch.
For the album cover we wanted to build that altar which would be pleasurable to watch but that also has some meaning to us. The collage behind the altar represent each one of us at that exact moment, Lori with the communication issues, Radu with his broken ego, Misu held together through personal power and Mircea partly part of the band at the time. To be honest, at the time we were very sure that this album will have been launched sooner and that it will be the first and the last so we weren’t shy in offering chrysantemums and candles to ourselves, like those on graves on the day of the dead. In the end it was not to be like that: the more we worked, the more we convinced each other that it is worth it to do a good job, that we shouldn’t ever give up. This is also one of the verses from the song with the name of the title, it is the thing we tell ourselves when we get stuck and we begin telling ourselves that we should just stop from doing what we’re doing.
Regarding the merch, we were saying that the designs are indirectly authentic and that’s because we didn’t bring any specific ideas. We worked with 3 super cool graphic artists, Mihai Manescu from Obsidian Nibs, Mara Conopan from CREEPS.ro and Dana Cumparatu from Dawn DDs Art and it would’ve been in bad taste for us to use them in order to achieve our goal. No. We sent them our album, we showed them the cover and we just asked them to create something in their own style, inspired from the music and maybe from the cover of “AIR”. And this is how the 3 super cool designs came to life , without any expectations and with the certainty that they will be works created by the 3 artists without any step by step guidance.
So yes,”authentic” is the word to describe this whole art behind the album.

What other plans do you have for 2020? What about 2021?

2020 is already almost completely booked, to put it like that. Next, we are going to take care of the campaign in order to fund the launch of the album “AIR”.You can access the campaign here.
We invite you to access the site and order CDs, vinyls, shirts, bundles through which you can help us launch this album. Every supporter will be added to the album’s lyrics booklets, no matter the amount that was donated. You would greatly support us and we are immensely grateful that you are helping us launch our album.
This will take place in October, when the campaign will take place. Starting with November, we will start the process of cashing in the donations and we will order the print for the album. We are working with a company from Poland and the final print of the vinyls will take place only after we receive 5 test prints. We want to make sure that everything is of the best quality!
After we finish with the subject of the print, the CDs will be delivered to us, the vinyls and the t-shirts and we will take care of the packages for those who supported the launch of our album. This will take place during November and December of 2020.
Regarding 2021, we hope that a final legal solution will be reached regarding indooor concerts. If not , we will see each other live after it’s warmer outside, at Stonebird Festival and at Maximum Rock Festival where we’re singing the same day as Devin Townsend and Katatonia.We will announce more shows where we will be singing in 2021.

Will there be a tour if possible? If so, where should we expect the concerts to be?

When possible, yes, there will be a tour. But, as I was saying before, only if there will be solutions for indoor concerts. If not, it would take place only during the summertime. But an ideal tour, if we’re allowed to dream, would start in Baia Mare , followed by Cluj-Napoca, it should go through Brasov, Bucuresti, Constanta, we would come back through Vaslui and we would startle Chisinau. There are some beloved cities where we would like to sing again , such as Targu Mures, Galati, Deva, but also cities where we didn’t sing yet. So there is will, there are places, the people are waiting for us, all there is to do is wait and see how this situation plays out.

What message would you send to the fans that are waiting for this album?

Thank you a lot for supporting us and we tell you this with all of our admiration. For us this is a really big step in our musical career and the fact that we have you besides us makes it all better! You know that beautiful things are achieved together. Putting aside the campaign, you, the people that await impatiently the album, you make it al worth it. And for that you have all of our respect. Keep it up, Riots!

Cât de greu a fost să inregistrați un album in 2020, luând în considerare restricțiile provocate de pandemie?

Salut și mersi de primire! N-am putea răspunde foarte cinstit la această întrebare pentru că albumul „AER” în sine a fost înregistrat în anul 2018 în totalitate. Dar am fost în studio și anul acesta și am reînregistrat o piesă pentru album și a mers totul strună. Nu credem că ar fi fost mai dificil din punct de vedere logistic să înregistrăm albumul în totalitate în 2020. Ne-am luat cu toții, atât trupa cât și inginerul de studio, măsurile normale de precauție, nu ne-am lins berile unul după altul, și treaba a mers bine. Deci pandemie 0 – 1 Riot Monk.

De unde provine numele albumului?

Eram în vara lui 2018 într-un apartament din Dristor, „4 ziua, căldură de vară p’afară”, acasă la Vladimir. Lucram pe coperta de album, făceam setup-ul altarului și ne-am apucat să scrijelim numele trupei pe acesta. În momentul respectiv aveam câteva variante de nume de album, de la „Orișicui” la „Día de los Monkos”. Era pe listă și „AER” încă de atunci și era printre favorite. Dar decizia care a bătut în cuie numele albumului a fost că celelalte nume erau prea lungi și nu ar fi dat bine pe copertă. Așa am decis să numim albumul „AER” într-un final.

Care este piesa voastră preferată de pe noul album și de ce?

Aici fiecare cu mama mă-sii, vorba aia, dar chiar nu avem o piesă preferată pentru că fiecare dintre ele are farmecul propriu. Faptul că am lansat mare parte dintre ele ca single-uri din 2018 și până azi a ajutat să cimenteze acest sentiment față de ele. „Contează” ne place pentru că avem povestea clipului în spate ei, „Be Pălincă” pentru că am „adăpat” o țară întreagă plus un festival din Republica Moldova cu pălincă, „Riot Day” pentru că Radu a furat de la Dirty Shirt în seara cu concertul de la Brașov. Deci toate îs speciale în felul lor. Ca album, în schimb, ele se leagă într-un fel aparte, am lucrat pe niște intervenții mișto tare pentru a le face să se împletească ca într-un album în adevăratul sens al cuvântului.
Bine, hai să o lăsăm cu filosofia, ne place mega mult „Be Pălincă” cu rapu’ lui Mircea în rusă. De ce? Că îi rap în fucking rusă! Varianta asta n-am lansat-o oficial dar urmează să o ascultați pe album dacă aveți răbdare.

Dacă ar fi să alegeti un cuvânt pentru a rezuma desenele pentru album și merch, care ar fi acela? De ce l-ați ales?

„Autentice” ar fi cel mai bun cuvânt. E parte și din filosofia trupei, etosul după care ne ghidăm încă de când ne-am pornit să facem muzică împreună. Autenticitatea și treaba bine făcută au fost din prima zi punctul fundamental de reper pentru noi și asta am vrut să insuflăm și în coperta de album și, indirect, în merch.
Pentru coperta de album am vrut să construim acel altar care să fie și plăcut privitului și să aibă și o însemnătate pentru noi. Colajul din spatele altarului ne reprezintă pe fiecare dintre noi la momentul respectiv, Lori cu problemele de comunicare, Radu cu egoul șubred, Mișu ținut laolaltă de puterea proprie și Mircea doar cu un picior în trupă la vremea respectivă. Ca să fim sinceri, la vremea respectivă eram foarte siguri că acest album va ieși mai repede și că va fi și primul și ultimul așa că nu ne-am sfiit de la a ne oferi crizanteme și lumânări, ca pe morminte de ziua morților. În cele din urmă nu a fost să fie așa; cu cât am tras mai tare, cu atât ne-am zis unii altora că bă, merită să facem treabă, nu trebuie să ne lăsăm decât după ce-om fi morți. Ăsta e și un vers din piesa care dă numele albumului, e o replică dată nouă atunci când ne iau gărgăunii și ne gândim că mai bine ne-am opri din a face ceea ce facem.
Cât despre merch, ziceam că design-urile sunt indirect autentice și asta pentru că nu am venit noi cu niște idei anume. Am colaborat cu trei artiști grafici super mișto, Mihai Mănescu de la Obsidian Nibs, Mara Conopan de la CREEPS.ro și Diana Cumpăratu de la Dawn DDs Art și ar fi fost de prost gust din partea nostră să îi folosim ca pe niște mijloace de a ne atinge scopul. Nu. Le-am trimis albumul, le-am arătat coperta și tot ce le-am cerut a fost să creeze ceva în stilul lor propriu inspirat din muzica și eventual din coperta albumului „AER”. Și așa au ieșit cele 3 designuri super mișto, fără așteptări și cu siguranța că vor ieși ca niște opere create de cei trei artiști fără a fi ținuți de mână.
Deci da, ,,autentice” e cuvântul care să descrie toată arta din spatele albumului.

Ce alte planuri aveți pentru anul 2020? Dar pentru 2021?

2020 deja e cam book-uit să zicem așa. Urmează să ne ocupăm de campania de strângere de fonduri pentru lansarea albumului „AER”, campanie pe care o puteți vizita aici: https://www.sprijina.ro/cauze/riotmonkaer
Vă invităm să vă uitați și să puneți o comandă de CD-uri, viniluri, tricouri, bundle-uri cu care să ne ajutați să ne lansăm albumul! Fiecare susținător va fi adăugat în booklet-ul cu versuri al albumului, indiferent de suma donată. Ne-ați ajuta maxim cu o donație și vă mulțumim din suflet că ne ajutați să ne lansăm albumul!
Asta va fi în luna Octombrie, lună când va fi live campania de strângere de fonduri. Începând cu luna Noiembrie vom începe demersurile pentru a intra în posesia banilor strânși din campanie și să dăm comanda de print pentru album. Colaborăm cu o firmă din Polonia la acest capitol și doar print-ul vinilurilor va fi final după ce vom primi 5 printuri de test. Vrem ca totul să fie la o calitate cât mai mare!
După ce vom termina cu subiectul print, urmează să ne fie livrate CD-urile, vinilurile și tricourile, să pregătim pachetele pentru cei care ne-au susținut lansarea albumului și să le livrăm. Asta se va întâmpla în luna Noiembrie și Decembrie a lui 2020.
Cât despre anul 2021, sperăm să se ajungă la vreo soluție legată de concertele indoor. Dacă nu, ne vom vedea live doar după ce vremea se va încălzi la Stonebird Festival și la Maximum Rock Festival unde vom cânta în aceeași zi cu Devin Townsend și Katatonia. Urmează să anunțăm și alte festivaluri la care vom fi prezenți în 2021.

Va exista și un turneu când va fi posibil? Daca da, în ce orașe să ne așteptăm să vă vedem?

Riot Monk: Când va fi posibil, da, va exista un turneu. Dar revin la răspunsul de la întrebarea anterioară, doar dacă se vor găsi soluții pentru concerte indoor. Dacă nu, la vară doar. Dar un turneu ideal, dacă ne permiteți să visăm, ar începe din Baia Mare, ar merge către Cluj-Napoca, ar trebe prin Brașov, București, Constanța, ne-am întoarce pe la Vaslui și am lovi Chișinăul. Sunt și orașe dragi unde ne-am dori să revenim cum ar fi Târgu Mureș, Galați, Deva, dar și orașe unde nu am ajuns încă. Deci dorință este, locuri sunt, lumea ne așteaptă, doar să vedem cum evoluează situația actuală.

Ce mesaj aveți pentru fanii care așteaptă acest album?

Riot Monk: Băi, mersi fain că sunteți cu noi și vă zicem asta cu toată admirația. Pentru noi e un pas foarte important în cariera noastră muzicală și faptul că vă avem lângă noi face drumul cu atât mai frumos! Știți și voi vorba aia, lucrurile frumoase se fac împreună sau cum dumnezo îi zice. Lăsând la o parte campania de strângere de fonduri, voi ăștia care stați cu sufletul la gură să vedeți albumul, voi faceți tot drumul ăsta să conteze. Și pentru asta nu avem decât respect
pentru voi. Băgați mare, Rioței!

Ce mesaj aveți pentru cei care vor citi acest interviu?

Băi, mersi fain că sunteți cu noi și vă zicem asta cu toată admirația hahaha! Nu da serios, ce am zis pentru fanii noștri, se aplică și pentru voi. Poate că nu ne-ați ascultat până acum, poate doar acum auziți de noi pentru prima data, nu contează. Ne pasă și știm că mirosiți de la o poștă când unele treburi sunt făcute din alte motive decât din pasiune și avem respectul ăsta pentru voi, să nu vă aburim cu povești vânătorești. Deci vă mulțumim maxim că v-ați luat din timp să ne cunoașteți!
