The doom metal band Doomnezeu has just released their new single, “Spânul,” through Wormholedeath Records. This single is part of their upcoming debut album, “Dați drumul la cer.” According to Thyartnoise, “Spânul” represents a conversation between Spânul and God.

“Spânul” literally means “a beardless man,” but in Romanian fairy tales, the spân is portrayed as a malevolent figure who exploits the hero’s good nature for his own advantage. In this sense, he serves as a moral trial for the hero, testing his character, resilience, and ability to distinguish between good and evil. With that clarified, let’s move on to Doomnezeu’s song.
Honestly, I was amazed by the brutality of this track. Even though I’m a fan of death metal in general, Doomnezeu usually feels like a moment of peace and reflection for me, so this blend of their signature style with the song’s aggressiveness was a pleasant surprise. The feminine voice provides exactly the balance needed—it’s truly mesmerizing.
In this story, Spânul is not the usual deceitful figure everyone is used to. He is portrayed as a man fully aware of his sins, not hiding from his own conscience. He represents a stain in a pure world, and despite that, God still calls him His son and urges him to repent. The voice of God is thundering, reminding the main character that He sees him, even as he tries to hide. Despite this severity, His words remain kind. He is still the most merciful being, continuing to offer salvation to sinners.
You can see them live in Control on the 21st of April as part of their tour, you can get your ticket here.
