A new instalment of the ALT JAZZ series lands at Control on Monday, May 18, in partnership with Jazz Unit, featuring Tereza Catarov and her London based quintet, set to perform in the Berlin Room.

A singer, pianist, and composer shaped by both Romanian and Bulgarian roots, Catarov builds a distinct sonic space where modern jazz meets the haunting textures of Balkan folk. Her music moves between intimacy and intensity, drawing from memory, heritage, and the voices of past generations particularly the women who shaped her early life.

For this performance, Catarov is joined by an international lineup featuring Ivo Neame, Cem Evin, Misha Mullov-Abbado, and Billy Pod a group of musicians recognized across the European jazz circuit for their distinct voices and collaborative energy.

At the core of her work lies Koren, her critically acclaimed debut album named one of the essential jazz releases of 2025. Rather than revisiting tradition, the record reframes it, transforming inherited stories and rare dialects into contemporary compositions that feel both timeless and immediate.

Based in London and trained across Bucharest, Groningen, and the Guildhall School, Catarov has steadily built a presence on the European jazz circuit, performing at events like the EFG London Jazz Festival and on stages such as the Southbank Centre.

On stage, her quintet expands these compositions into something fluid and immersivelayering voice, improvisation, and intricate arrangements into a live experience that feels both personal and expansive.

With appearances at venues and festivals like Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and the EFG London Jazz Festival already under her belt, Catarov continues to position herself as one of the most compelling emerging voices in European jazz.
