Thyrfing, one of the key bands of the Swedish viking / black metal scene, will perform in Romania for the very first time. The event will take place on May 9 at Quantic and will bring together three bands with different approaches to pagan, folk, and black metal: Thyrfing, Bucovina, and Ashaena.

Formed in Stockholm in 1995, Thyrfing belongs to the generation that defined Swedish viking metal in the late ’90s. The band emerged from the black metal scene but quickly developed its own distinct language, where themes inspired by Norse mythology are supported by expansive compositions, powerful riffs, and a strong melodic component.

The band’s name comes from the sword Tyrfing, a legendary weapon from Norse mythology, a detail that immediately reflects their connection to Scandinavian imagery. From their self-titled debut album Thyrfing released in 1998 to Vanagandr in 2021, the band has built a consistent discography in which the aggression of black metal meets epic structures and an aesthetic rooted in Nordic traditions.

Albums such as Valdr Galga, Urkraft, Vansinnesvisor, Farsotstider, Hels vite, and De ödeslösa have cemented Thyrfing’s position within the European viking / black metal scene. After nearly three decades of activity, the band remains relevant through its consistency and refusal to reduce its music to simple mythological themes.

Bucovina – 20 Years Since Their Debut Album

Founded in Iași in 2000, Bucovina is one of the bands that helped shape Romanian folk metal over the past two decades. The band built its identity through a sound where heavy riffs, black metal influences, and melodic lines inspired by Romanian folklore function as parts of the same musical language.

With albums such as Ceasul aducerii-aminte, Sub stele, Nestrămutat, Septentrion, and Suntem Aici, Bucovina became a landmark of the Romanian metal scene.

In 2026, 20 years will have passed since the release of their debut album Ceasul aducerii-aminte, originally released in 2006. Two decades later, the record remains the first major chapter of a discography that contributed to defining contemporary Romanian folk metal.

Ashaena – Romanian Pagan Metal with Moldavian Identity

Ashaena completes the lineup with pagan / folk / black metal inspired by Romanian folklore, local mythology, and ancient history. Originally formed in 2006 as a project by Cosmin “Hultanu” Duduc, the band gradually developed its own formula, associated with the Moldavian Pagan Metal / Moldavian Heathen Metal scene.

The albums Cei născuți din pământ and Calea are the main landmarks of Ashaena’s discography, showcasing a more sober and atmospheric approach to Romanian pagan metal, with a strong focus on lyrics, atmosphere, and historical or mythological themes.

On May 9, the concert brings together three distinct forms of metal built around mythology, folklore, and cultural memory: Thyrfing, Bucovina, and Ashaena.
