Mock Surprise bring new album “OKAPI” to Târgu Mureș on October 23, with Iasomia opening the night

Cluj based alternative rock and math rock band Mock Surprise will return to Târgu Mureș on October 23 for a show at The Office Club, where they will perform their newly released album, “OKAPI,” in its entirety, alongside selected tracks from their previous record, “Portmanteau.” Local progressive rock and math rock band Iasomia will open the evening.

Originally formed in Oradea and now based in Cluj, Mock Surprise have developed a sound that resists easy categorisation. Their music draws from a wide range of influences, combining intricate structures and aggressive passages with unexpected shifts in style.

Released on September 16, “OKAPI” further expands the band’s musical palette across nearly 54 minutes. Tracks such as “The Plan” and “Antelope Song” retain the sophisticated aggression that characterised “Portmanteau,” while “The Hug” explores a more pop oriented direction and “Flowers” incorporates jazz influences. The introduction of piano and acoustic guitar also marks a new chapter in the band’s sound, opening the door to arrangements that move beyond their established approach.

The October 23 concert will offer audiences the opportunity to hear the new album in full and experience the range of styles that define the band’s latest work, alongside some of the most popular songs from “Portmanteau.”

Opening the show, Târgu Mureș based five piece Iasomia will bring their own take on progressive rock and math rock. Formed in 2025, the band draws inspiration from acts such as Dance Gavin Dance and Tricot, combining complex rhythms with an organic, dynamic sound shaped by the relationship between nature and human expression.

Their debut single, “Fariseu,” showcases the group’s instrumental virtuosity and their ability to blend math rock structures with the freedom of jazz fusion and funk inspired grooves, all accompanied by Romanian lyrics. This distinctive approach has helped establish Iasomia as one of the promising emerging names in Romania’s alternative music scene.

Tickets for the concert are available through iabilet.ro.
